Title: F.E.A.R.

Description:
When it comes to today\'s entertainment, genuinely creepy stuff is a new trend. The previous era of scariness was dominated by Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, and games like DooM. Horror and gore took precedence over fright. But now there\'s a new breed, with The Blair Witch Project, The Ring, and The Sixth Sense. It\'s all about the supernatural, and it taps into a strange something that isn\'t easily shaken off. On the games side, F.E.A.R. is poised to take up the reins and ride the nightmare. At its heart, it\'s an action game, but it comes wrapped in ghosts and evil. And Monolith\'s release date? \"When it\'s done.\"

Today at the Game Developers Conference, we finally got our our hands on the single-player side of things. But first, we were treated to a spooky intro clip. Light on dialogue but heavy on stylized action, it set the tone. A man is kneeling in a cell. The door opens, and a little girl is standing in the doorway. He screams, and we cut to a prison guard, who\'s felled by a knife in the back a moment later by the prisoner in a move reminiscent of anime swordfighting--a slow-motion uppercut, a stream of blood, then we cut to some more guards. Some masked soldiers enter, and next thing we know, all the guards are dead, and the escaped prisoner is flanked by the soldiers and kneeling down in front of one of the guards. We hear chunky sounds, but we can\'t quite tell what the prisoner is doing to the body. The camera moves closer, the prisoner whips around, briefly, and his mouth is covered in blood. End sequence.

Here was where we got up to the keyboards and mice to explore this weird and gooey world. We start out in a helicopter, which drops us in what appears to be a train yard or warehouse. The gate is locked, and you must go around to an overlooking room to hit a button that opens it. As you return to your group, however, time suddenly slows to a crawl, and each your fireteam disappears in a burst of glittering cinders as you\'re rounding the fence. Working your way into the complex, you come across brutally mutilated bodies, and then there\'s one of the soldiers from the intro clip, his back to you, firing bullets into a dead body. By this time, you\'re armed with a shotgun, an SMG, and a pistol, and it\'s go time.
